چکیده

We present a method for providing response-time guarantees for multimedia traffic in Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. The method extends our ResponseTime Analysis (RTA) for ATM networks to better capture the behaviour of MPEG-type multimedia traffic. RTA is intended for admission control of hard real-time traffic, i.e., it determines if a new connection can be admitted without violating the timing requirements of the new as well as any already admitted connection. We evaluate the extended RTA by comparing it with our original RTA, which does not consider the specific traffic patterns of MPEG-type multimedia traffic. In addition, we show how Weighted Fair Queueing (WFQ) and Calculus for Network Delays (CND) can be adopted to MPEG-type multimedia traffic, and compare the thus obtained analysis with our extended RTA. Evaluations indicate that our new method yields both higher achievable network utilisation and shorter analysis times compared to the original RTA, and higher achievable network utilisation compared to both the adapted WFQ and CND. Analysis of VBR Traffic on ATM Network using Simulation Method

ATM or Asynchronous Transfer Mode is a network transfer technique that supports a large variety of applications having diverse performance requirements and service. Traffic bandwidths and traffic types are supported by it from constant, fixed rate traffic to the traffic that is highly bursty. The delay bandwidth and loss requirements of the present day real time multimedia traffics greatly diff...

Integration of ATM and Satellite Networks: Traffic Management Issues

The design of effective traffic and resource management policies is a key issue in the deployment of ATM-satellite systems. This paper proposes a technique of call admission control and dynamic resource management to support ATM traffic classes in satellite environments. The effectiveness of the strategy is assessed by referring to the EuroSkyWay multimedia satellite platform, based on Ka-band ...

A Novel Cell Scheduler with QoS Guarantee for Services in ATM Networks∗

Real-time services, including constant bit rate (CBR) and real-time variable bit rate traffic (rt-VBR), have become increasingly important owing to the rapid proliferation of multimedia applications. A cell multiplexing method capable of handling real-time traffic should satisfy related quality of service (QoS) requirements, including cell transfer delay (CTD), cell delay variation (CDV) and ce...
